ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the effects of embodied emotion priming on attentional bias of individuals with depression tendency. Methods:From June to December 2018, a total of 91 college students with depression tendency were recruited to participate in the experiment.A 3(embodied emotion priming: positive priming, negative priming and no priming) × 2 (emotional face: happy and sad) mixed design was adopted to measure the attentional bias of individuals with depression tendency using the dot probe paradigm. SPSS 22.0 statistical software was used for repeated measurement analysis of variance. Results:In terms of attentional bias, the interaction effect between embodied emotion priming types and emotional faces was significant ( F(2, 88)=5.97, P=0.004, ηp2=0.119). Further simple effect analysis showed that, under the happy-face condition, participants' attentional bias reaction time(△RT) was significantly higher when primed with embodied positive emotion than those primed with embodied negative emotion((14.30±18.23)ms, (-6.53±38.17)ms, P<0.05). The participants' attentional bias △RT was significantly lower when primed with embodied negative emotion than participants with no priming ((-6.53±38.17)ms, (9.16±30.62)ms, P<0.05). Under the sad-face condition, the participants' attentional bias △RT was significantly higher when primed with embodied negative emotion((28.22±35.33)ms) than participants primed with embodied positive emotion((11.71±29.24)ms, P<0.05) and no priming ((7.63±30.60)ms, P<0.05). Conclusion:Embodied emotion priming can affect the attentional bias of individuals with depression tendency.

ABSTRACT

Berberine (BBR) as one of the most effective natural products has been increasingly used to treat various chronic diseases due to its immunosuppressive/tolerogenic activities. However, it is unknown if BBR can be applied without abrogating the efforts of vaccination. Here we show that priming of CD8+ T cells in the presence of BBR lead to improved central memory formation (Tcm) with substantially reduced effector proliferation, primarily orchestrated through activation of AMPK and Stat5. Tcm derived from vaccinated mice fed with BBR were able to adoptively transfer protective immunity to naïve recipients. Vaccination of BBR-fed mice conferred better memory protection against infection without losing immediate effector efficacy, suggesting appreciable benefits from using BBR in vaccination. Thus, our study may help to lay the groundwork for mechanistic understanding of the immunomodulatory effects of natural products and their potential use as adjuvant that allows the design of novel vaccines with more desirable properties.

ABSTRACT

A huge amount of rice cultivation and consumption occur in Asia particularly in Pakistan and China. However, multiple abiotic stresses especially high and low-temperature proved to be a substantial threat for rice production ultimately risks for food security. To overcome various types of abiotic stress; seed priming is among the effective approaches to improve the rice seed germination and growth vigor. Therefore, the present study was planned to evaluate physiological and biochemical modifications in Chinese and Pakistani rice varieties by Qiangdi 863 biological assistant growth apparatus nano treated water (NTW), Osmo priming Calcium chloride (CaCl2), redoxpriming hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hormonal priming by Salicylic acid (SA) under temperature stress conditions. The experiment was performed with completely randomize design conditions. Five rice varieties, nomenclature as Zhongzoa 39, (Chinese rice variety) KSK 133, KS 282, Super basmati and PK 1121 aromatic (Pakistani rice variety) were sown under low temperature (LT) (17ºC), optimal temperature (OT) 27ºC and high temperature (HT) 37ºC conditions. The present study indicated that nanopriming were the most effective treatments increased Germination Energy Percentage (GEP) (96.1, 100, 100%), Speed of Germination (SG) (27.2, 35.45, 37.1), Final Germination Percentage (FGP) (98.2, 99.1, 99.4%), Seedling Dry Weight Biomass (DWB) (0.1, 0.137, 0.14g), Total Chlorophyll Content (0.502, 13.74, 15.21), antioxidant enzymes Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)(3145, 2559, 3345 µg-1FWh-1), Catalase (CAT) (300, 366, 3243 µg-1FWh-1) and decreased Malondialdehyde (MDA) (6.5, 12.2, 6.5 µmol g-1 FW) for Zhongzao 39 and KSK 133 rice varieties under low (LT+NTW), optimal temperature (OP+NTW) and high temperature (HT+NTW) stress., Therefore, nano-priming is recommended to cope with the high and low-temperature stress conditions along with improved productivity of rice.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In this study, we investigated the influence of the olfactive stimulus on visual attention. Two groups of 30 subjects participated in two experiments. Both experiments presented two arrays of fruits stimulus intercalated by an olfactive intervention. The stimulus was received in the form of images by the first group and in the form of words by the second group. An eye-tracking device monitored the timekeeping of visual attention dispensed in each stimulus. The results showed that olfactive priming influenced visual attention in both cases but with a greater degree in the images stimulus group. This study shows for the first time that image information is more susceptible to priming olfactive information than wording information. This effect may be associated with the formation of mental images in working memory, aroused by fragrances.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Aim: This systematic review aimed to investigate the acute effects of cardiovascular exercise on motor learning of non-disabled individuals. Methods: Forty studies were identified through database searching (PsycINFO, CENTRAL, Google Scholar, Scielo, and PUBMED). The studies demonstrated heterogeneity and were classified into two categories to guide the analyses: (1) - studies that investigated the effects of exercise-induced fatigue during practice on the performance in the retention test; (2) - studies that verified the acute impact of the cardiovascular exercise in close temporal proximity to the task practice on motor learning. Results: The studies demonstrated that (1) - the practice under fatigue conditions did not impair motor learning and that (2) - the cardiovascular exercise bout performed in close temporal proximity to task practice enhances the motor learning processes. Conclusion: Cardiovascular exercise enhances motor learning processes; however, these priming effects are dependents on the timing between practice and exercise, type of exercise, and task characteristics.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The literature on classical conditioning of attitudes (CCA) does not report the use of human vocalizations to create or intensify attitudes. This study aimed to test the ability of contagious laughter acoustic stimuli to elicit positive attitudes towards neutral commercial brands when used as unconditioned stimuli in CCA. 60 university students of both genders, aged between 18 and 30 years, participated. Based on an intra-subject experimental design the CCA was applied, which involved the simultaneous pairing of neutral commercial brands with more and less contagious laugher. Five hypotheses were tested comparing explicit (measured with semantic differential) and implicit attitudes (measured by evaluative priming and electromyographic amplitude -EMG- of the zygomatic muscle) between pre- and postconditioning and between commercial brands conditioned with more vs less contagious laugher. Concerning the baseline, there were greater explicit postconditioning attitudes towards commercial brands paired with more contagious laughter; no explicit attitudinal differences were found between brands conditioned with more vs. less contagious laughter. Only implicit attitudinal differences were evidenced between pre- and postconditioning for the commercial brand paired with the most contagious male laughter. No differences in the zygomatic EMG amplitude were observed between pre- and postconditioning or between commercial brands paired with more vs. less contagious laughter. We conclude that contagious laughter has the capacity to transfer affective valence to neutral stimuli and that concordance is not always observed between explicit and implicit postconditioning attitudes.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of bicarbonate Ringer′s solution applied in cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in cardiac surgery. Methods:Sixty patients of both sexes, aged 55-75 yr, undergoing cardiac valve replacement under CPB, were selected and randomly divided into compound electrolyte solution group (group A, n=30) and bicarbonate Ringer′s solution group (group B, n=30). Group A was primed with 1 500 ml compound electrolyte solution, group B was primed with 1 500 ml bicarbonate Ringer′s solution, and both groups were primed with 1 000 ml succinylated gelatin.Zero-balanced ultrafiltration was carried out during the rewarming stage. The replacement solution was compound electrolyte solution 2 000 ml in group A, and the replacement solution was bicarbonate Ringer′s solution 2 000 ml in group B. Sodium bicarbonate solution was continuously dripped into an intravenous blood storage tank during CPB, and the acid-base balance disorder was corrected according to the results of blood gas analysis. The peripheral venous blood samples or venous blood samples from the oxygenator were obtained for blood gas analysis before CPB, at 30 min of CPB, at 5 min after opening the ascending aorta for calcium supplementation, at the end of zero-balanced ultrafiltration, and at 5 min after termination of CPB.Venous blood samples were collected from the oxygenator before the start of zero-balanced ultrafiltration and at the end of zero-balanced ultrafiltration for determination of erythrocyte osmotic fragility and concentrations of 2, 3-diphosphoglycerate. Results:Compared with group A, PaCO 2, Ca 2+ and HCO 3-concentrations were significantly increased at 30 min of CPB and at the end of zero-balanced ultrafiltration ( P<0.05), and no significant change was found in pH value, BE, Glu, Lac, serum Na + , Cl - and K + concentrations, erythrocyte osmotic fragility and concentration of 2, 3-diphosphoglycerate in group B ( P>0.05). Conclusion:Bicarbonate Ringer′s solution can be safely and effectively used for CPB in cardiac surgery.

ABSTRACT

The first experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of seed priming on germination behavior and seedling establishment in Vicia faba and Vicia sativa, for that, seeds priming was done using SA (100 µM) and KH2PO4. In order to determine the optimal concentration of KH2PO4 for improving germination, different concentrations were used: 25 µM, 50 µM, and 100 µM. The best germination behavior and seedling establishment were obtained with 25 and 50 µM KH2PO4, respectively for Vicia faba and Vicia sativa. Moreover, data showed that 100 µM of SA improved seed germination as well as the seedling establishment for both species. The second experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of seed priming for improving phosphorous (P) deficiency tolerance. To do, seedling obtained from primed and nonprimed seeds were grown in a hydroponic culture system with three different treatments: control (C, medium containing sufficient P concentration: 360 µM KH2PO4), direct phosphorus-deficient (DD, medium containing only 10 µM KH2PO4), and induced P deficiency by bicarbonate (ID, medium containing sufficient P concentration: 360 µM KH2PO4 + 0.5 g L-1 CaCO3 + 10 mM NaHCO3). Furthermore, the role of exogenous SA applied to P deficiency tolerance enhancement was explored. Seed priming or the exogenous application of SA significantly reduced the severity effect of P deficiency. In fact, the pretreated plants were observed more tolerant to P deficiency as reflected from the significant increase in plant biomass, P uptake, and an efficient antioxidant system. Overall, this paper highlights the beneficial effect of seeds priming or the exogenous application of SA in the improvement of plant tolerance to phosphorus deficiency.

ABSTRACT

Rationale: Crop production and quality of produce get affected by drought, stand establishment and low availability of nutrients. Apart from various prevailing methods, seed treatment through priming now-a-days has been found to noticeably improve crop establishment for increasing seed yield and quality. Aim: To study the effect of various seed priming options on rapeseed-mustard varieties. Place of Study: A field experiment was conducted at AB Block Farm, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal, India during winter season of 2017-2018. Methodology: Experiment comprised six rapeseed-mustard varieties (Anushka, Sanchita, TBM-143,TBM-204, Kranti and Pusa Bold) in main plot and five seed priming options (KH2PO4 @ 0.15 mol 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1, KNO3 @ 0.1 mol 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1, PEG 6000 @ -0.3 MPa 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1, hydro priming @ 100 ml 5 g seeds-1 and control) in subplot, replicated thrice in a split plot design. Observations on growth and yield contributing parameters were recorded from the field. Further, various quality parameters of seed and seedlings were evaluated in the laboratory. Data on all the parameters were finally statistically analyzed. Results: Among the varieties, Pusa Bold performed better in terms of growth, yield contributing parameters and seed yield under seed priming through either KH2PO4 @ 0.15 mol 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1 or PEG 6000 @ -0.3 MPa 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1. Seed and seedling quality parameters such as root and shoot lengths, seedling fresh and dry weights, germination % and vigour index were also improved under the same. Conclusion: Cultivation of mustard variety, Pusa Bold by seed priming through any of those two chemicals (KH2PO4 or PEG 6000) can be recommended for New alluvial zone of West Bengal, India.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to investigate possible effects of divided attention on repetition priming from a selective review of the literature. Studies were included if they utilized perceptual and/or conceptual priming tasks, in which the division of attention was performed during encoding or retrieval. In general, the results suggested that perceptual and conceptual priming were affected by divided attention during encoding. This effect occurred when the secondary task (or distractor task) demanded higher levels of attention, requiring frequent task responses and it was presented simultaneously to the memory target stimulus. The few studies investigating retrieval showed that perceptual and conceptual priming are not sensitive to divided attention. Therefore, implicit memory processes may require attentional resources in the encoding. Theoretical implications of the results are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Aim To investigate whether Sal B alleviates hypoxic-induced cardiomyocyte injury by regulating the priming of NLRP3 inflammasomes. Methods The effects of Sal B on growth of H9C2 cells were examined by CCK8 assay, then the appropriate concen tration of Sal B was selected. The expression level of LDH was detected by Microliter assay. The expression levels of cTn/IL-lp were measured by Elisa assay. The protein and mRNA levels of TLR4/Myd88/I-RAK1/NF-kB/NLRP3 were detected by Western blot and qPCR. Results Hypoxia intervention notably reduced the viability of H9C2 cells and increased the expression levels of cTn/IL-IP. Besides, the protein and mRNA expression levels of TLR4/Myd88/IRAK1/NF-kB/NLRP3 were significant uP-regulated after hypoxia intervention. However, the viability of H9C2 cells increased, the secretion levels of LDH/cTn/IL-1 p were reduced, and the protein and mRNA levels of TLR4/Myd88/IRAK1/NF-KB/NLRP3 were significant inhibited after pretreated with Sal B. Conclusion Sal B attenuates cardiomyocyte injury by regulating the priming of NLRP3 inflammasome.I.

ABSTRACT

The present study addresses the incidence of Parkinson's disease in the processing of semantic information during visual word recognition tasks. In order to do so, the performance of a group of patients with Parkinson's was compared with the performance of subjects without neurological impairment in two experiments. We evaluate the effects of presentation time of a semantic prime (Experiment 1) and anortho-phonologically mediated semantic prime (Experiment 2), and the impact of the lexical frequency of both the prime and the target words. Participants divided into three groups (a clinical group, an age control group and a group of young adults), completed a reaction time lexical decision task in the go-no-go modality. They had to respond by pressing a computer key if the stimulus presented on the screen was a word. Otherwise, the participants should not press any key. The results, based on response accuracy and reaction times, show a semantic deficit in the clinical group, while this group was, nevertheless, sensitive to the frequency of the words and their presentation time. As a whole, the results are consistent with the existing literature, and contribute to a better understanding of the linguistic deficit present in Parkinson's disease.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Priming refers to administration of asubanaesthetic dose (priming dose) of an agent prior to itsactual anaesthetic dose. The “priming principle” is a methodto reduce the total dose requirements of a drug. This studywas undertaken to study the effect of priming principle oninduction dose requirements of propofol.Material and Methods: Sixty (60) patients with AmericanSociety of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) I and ASA II grades,of both sexes, aged 18-55 years, and undergoing electivesurgical procedures under general anaesthesia were randomlyallocated into two equal groups with 30 patients each. GroupI (control) received calculated induction dose of injection(inj.) propofol 2mg/kg. Group II (study) received 20% of totalcalculated induction dose of propofol 2 mg/kg as a primingdose and remaining dose after 60 seconds titrated till loss ofthe eyelash reflex. Results: The control group consumed a higher dose of inj.propofol (2 mg/kg) as compared with the study group (1.34± 0.28 mg/kg), i.e., there was 33% reduction of the total dosein the study group. The hemodynamic changes in HR, SBP,DBP, MAP and RPP at 30 minutes before induction, justbefore induction, immediately after intubation and 5 minutesafter induction were similar in both groups (P > 0.05) .Thehemodynamic changes in HR, SBP, DBP, MAP and RPP atone minute after induction were statistically significant inboth the groups (P< 0.05). Incidence of pain and apnea wascomparable in both groups but hypotension was seen in 4patients in control group and none in study group. Conclusion: The priming technique effectively reduced thetotal induction dose requirements of propofol and favourablyreduced extent of hypotension following induction withpropofol.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of spermine, a polyamine as a protective agent on accelerated ageing of onion seeds. Methodology: Onion seeds variety Pusa Riddhi was primed with six concentrations of spermine (0.10 mM to 1.25 mM) and also with hydration and halopriming (2% K2HPO4). Hydrated, haloprimed and un-primed seeds were used as control. The primed and control seeds were accelerated aged at 45 oC and 100 % RH for 72 hr. Seed quality was assessed in control, freshly primed seeds, and in primed seeds subjected to accelerate ageing. Results: All priming treatments enhanced the seed quality, there was 2.34–20.33 % increase in germination. Seed priming with 2% K2HPO4 had highest seed quality improvement which was at par with 1.25 mM spermine primed seeds. Enhanced seed vigour and the activity of antioxidant enzymes over un-primed seeds was observed in both 2% K2HPO4 and spermine primed seeds over unprimed seds. Seeds primed with 1.25 mM spermine recorded 66.66 % and 650 % increase in the activity of ROS scavenging enzymes SOD and POD respectively, but they were at par with halopriming. After accelerated ageing, deterioration in seed quality was minimal in seeds primed with spermine. Seeds primed with 1.25 mM spermine recorded 21.33% higher germination, 62.10 % higher speed of germination, 26.56 % longer seedlings, 13.68 % heavier seedlings and 175 % and 200 % higher SOD and POD activity as comparised to un-primed seeds. Seeds primed with 1.25 mM spermine also performed better over halopriming and hydropriming treatments. Interpretation: Onion seed priming with 1.25 mM spermine was most effective treatment in enhancing the seed germination and vigour under accelerated ageing conditions.

ABSTRACT

The present systematic review aims to address the contribution of brain imaging studies to the investigation of semantic priming (SP). Only studies from 2001 to 2017 using lexical decision tasks with visual and auditory stimuli, were considered. The review resulted in 20 articles, which showed semantic priming effects (SPE) in several brain areas (frontal and temporal lobes, cingulate gyrus, supplementary motor areas, and parietal cortex). In this way, the identification of activation in these areas varied as a function of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA). Data suggests both hemispheres are involved on SPE, with a more robust role of the left hemisphere. Specifically, a decreased activation on the left middle temporal gyrus was found to be related to automatic SPE. This same area seemed to be related to SPE at long SOAs, along with the left inferior frontal gyrus and the anterior cingulated cortex. Therefore, a strong performance of the left hemisphere in semantic priming tasks could be observed, especially in the left middle temporal gyrus. Its activation was modulated by short and long intervals between stimuli, with more activation associated with longer intervals.
